The Tau Ceti update is finally expected to come this month.
However, I am not going to update the HHG with TC stuff anymore.
I have made this difficult decision after all these years of my commitment to this guide.
The reason is purely work and familiy related; I don't have the time anymore that I used to have.

Since 2009 I spent in the order of a thousand hours of spare time creating the HHG, an equivalent of about 3 years of full-time employment - without the wage ;-)
I would like to acknowledge the two £5 donations from the community.

I took great pride in the guide and satisfaction in its usefulness to so many fellow pilots.
 Best wishes to all!

Added a Locator Drone Scan Tool to help quickly find Santa's hidden stashes. It works on trilateration (like GPS positioning).
Open the Planet Map Explorer (usually Kalabesh or Aurora) and activate "Santa's Stash" in the legend.
A calculated stash target shows on the map, based on the data fed into the Scan Tool.
Therefore, use your Locator Drone at any three different locations (a couple of grids apart should suffice) and enter your X, Y ship position and Distance reading for all three scans.
The target will be recalculated instantly. Go get it! :)

Armor adjustments

The Ship simulator has been updated according to the recent in-game armor adjustments.
 The following has changed:

Methanoid armor increased by 6.25% (for both, Draco ships LvL75 and Ancient Hybrids LvL85).
Technically, this armor turns a Draco ship into a Sirius ship!

Sirius armor decreased by 15% (Prototype ships LvL75)

Added Ancient armor as an advanced Sirius armor for Prototypes with factor 2 better than (new) Sirius armor

Every Ancient Hybrid ship armor index adjusted by +2.2222%

Ancient Hybrids with Bulkwark increased by 73.7777%

 A Sirius-Prototype (75) is now 1.2× a Methanoid-Standard ship (75)
A Sirius-Dominator (75) is now 1.8× a Bulkwark-Punisher (71)
An Ancient-Dominator (85) is now 1.6× a Methanoid-Punisher (85)

Some minor figure updates are still outstanding, and the Ancient Hybrid's Thermograde and Deluvian is still unknown (temporarily grayed out).

PS: You may need to clear your browser cache and refresh the HHG to work properly.

The new Hybrid Parsec of the Halloween 2015 event adds to the list of desirable ships with following stats:
- Armor index: 160
That is 6.67% more than Domi or HyAn. But Black Granite still has 6.25% more than Emperor.
- Flight speed: 87.7 m/s
That is roughly as fast as Obsidian/Scorpion/Locust.
- Mean c-WPI (combined-weapons power index): 72
That is similar to the firepower of Legionary or Veiled Quartz; with moderately high energy consumption: Rating

Also, its Protector makes the ship stun-proof and fit for escort missions.
SU+Boss count on R1 to R4.
Feel free to confirm your findings. Thx.

I've long assumed the Sirius kill-achievements are bugged because many Boss and Strong unit kills never counted in the achievement.
But I figured there is a deliberate pattern. Certain units do only count on certain planet rings, depending on the enemy type:

What is best Blaster-SniperBlaster combo for Sniper ship?

This post concerns only Sniper ships with Ancient Tech.
I evaluated the damage output of all possible combinations of balanced/strong Blaster with rapid/balanced/strong sniper blaster.
Taken in isolation, ancient variants are the same on average, e.g. strong blaster produces twice the damage but has twice the cooldown of balanced one.
However, in combination some combos produce undesirable cooldown overlaps and other combos are more efficient.
Below graph list all combos, with balanced Blaster + balanced SB as reference (value 1).

The fate of the Mutilator Parsec - Good news!

The ship's armor has been bugged since introduction 10 months ago. If you didn't know, it's been 25% too high.
Reason: Because A is true, B cannot also be true (coz of the META-X's rare bonus). Unfortunately it is.

A)

=

=

At long last, I received an acknowledgement of the bug by Splitscreen in early April.

Don't panic!

I was told it is very likely the armor will not be lowered in order not to negatively impact the owners of this ship after such a long time.
Over a month on, the HyAn's armor remains untouched.
To make things fit Splitscreen would actually have to give the HyAn Mutilator Parsec a "Rare" status, instead (no other prototype ship has that).
I personally doubt they will bother with that detail.

For you as player, see the HyAn Mutilator Parsec as a one of a kind ship with no official Rare status but still +25% rare bonus on top of the familiar +20% prototype bonus.
According to Adam Ries, that totals to +50% armor bonus (100%×1.20×1.25=150%).

Congratulations to the HyAn owners and thanks Splitscreen for this generous bug.

"Energy Efficiencies" of BP items and "Energy Ratings" of ships

Assigned each an "Energy Consumption" index.
The greater the index the more energy an item consumes (per single use).
Example:
Item with uses 3× as much energy as an item with .
Item with uses 2× as much energy as an item with .

If we consider the ratio of energy consumption and total cycle time of each item we can plot the effective energy consumptions (energy per time interval).

Summing up ship class specific items, it follows that Tanks are the most energy efficient ships, whereas Snipers are the most energy consuming, only still surpassed by the Punisher.
We can assign each ship class an "Energy Rating" according to following graphic:

Test Results for Attack Charge

When you use Attack Buff your weapons deal an extra amount of damage, like a damage bonus on top of the weapon's natural hit statistic.
That means you will not notice more critical hits with Buff even though you deal more damage.
In contrast, the Aim Computer alters the natural hit statistic – shifting the bell-shaped distribution function towards the upper end, so you see more critical hits.
For an average Blaster shot I measured the following approximate damages with different Buffs:

Buff

damage [a.u.]

–

100

110

116

Long

133

Strong

166

With a Strong Buff you can make 66% more damage than w/o Buff! That's way beyond the capabilities of Aim Computers, strong or not.
Also, it comes as a surprise that the Long Buff is stronger than regular Ancient.

PS: Statistics behind the figures is not very solid, I only used 75 Blaster shots each but the trend is clear.

If we factor in their active and cooldown times we can calculate the "efficiency" of each Buff to give us an educated guess which Buff best to install.

Buff

efficiency

–

0

1

<sup>100×0+100×1</sup>⁄<sub>0+1</sub>=100

60s

41s

<sup>110×60s+100×41s</sup>⁄<sub>60s+41s</sub>=106

60s

41s

<sup>116×60s+100×41s</sup>⁄<sub>60s+41s</sub>=110

Long

90s

27.5s

<sup>133×90s+100×27.5s</sup>⁄<sub>90s+27.5s</sub>=125

Strong

40s

61.5s

<sup>166×40s+100×61.5s</sup>⁄<sub>40s+61.5s</sub>=126

Long and Strong turn out to be equally efficient, i.e. what the Long is weaker than the Strong it makes up for it with its better timing.

Test Results for Speed Actuator (updated on 06 June 2015)

Below test results indicate the top tech Speed Actuators seem to be bugged, at least the Ancient Strong, for the systems tested: Vega, Antares and Sol (perhaps for all systems), as they don't differ within the limits of measurement error.

 * tested on Sol tech BPs

As we can see, Speed Acturators can reduce item cooldowns by as much as ca. 29%.

--- The below does not apply anymore since Speed Actuator fix in January 2014. There is no more 1.5s capping ---

However, Blasters are an exception to this. That's because, apart from the Strong version, Blasters have naturally low cooldown times, and when speeded up cooldown must never fall below the global cooldown limit of 1.5 sec
(the grey "curtain" dropping down all 8 items after each item use).
Consequently, cooldowns of speeded regular and rapid Blasters bottom out at 1.5s even though the Speed Actuator would accelerate them below 1.5s.

The Event Mission is fairly easy compared to previous ship events. The mission yields 1 out of 10 needed BP fragments.
Despite the drop, it's NOT a rare ship,
costing as much as all other non-rare Mizar ships, 7'494.

The Scorpion's armor index is 82, that is, 8.9% weaker than an Engineer (armor index 90). But its complements the weak armor well.
The light armor makes for an exceptionally agile space ship: with 87.3 it is currenlty the fastest ship in the game (faster than the Engineer class!)

I computed the Scorpion's mean combined-weapons power index with 81 points; virtually identical to the Storm class
(the Storm's is replaced by , both having virtually the same effective power index of ~3s-1)
But the aggro bomb's splash damage is an added bonus.

The Ship Simulator's updated JS files may require you to clear your browser cache for proper operation.

New armor indices for ship classes

Please be advised that I have rescaled the armor indices of all ship classes by a factor of nine tenth.
Since the armor indices are relative figures, multiplying all by the same factor does not change their meaning.
The ratio of armor strengths among different ship classes remains the same (e.g. Tank has 50% more armor than Storm) and the Armor/Damage Simulator still calculates the same damage to weapons and HP restore to repair items.
But the rescaling helps remove the fractional parts in some armor indices and arriving at whole numbers (just mathematically more esthetic and perhaps more likely the way Spliscreen actually programmed them, who knows ;-)
Below are the old and new armor indices for all classes:

Tank:

166.66

→ 150

Storm:

111.11

→ 100

Engineer:

100

→ 90

Shock:

105.55

→ 95

Sniper:

100

→ 90

Defender:

133.33

→ 120

PS: the browser cache needs clearing for proper work of the Simulator (e.g. use CCleaner)

Extended drone system

 Splitscreen extended the drone system.
Up to three drones can be installed into each ship but the 2nd and 3rd drone slots must first be unlocked with a certain cryonite charge.
Only one drone can be the 'active drone' at any time.
The charging, storage (remove from drone slot) and switching of active drone can now be done on-the-fly via a sliding panel added to the bottom HUD.
The A101 armor drone now comes factory equipped with only +1% boost (formerly +5%), but can now level up to +5% through the gain of XP.
Fire-power Fan drones remain unchanged and can currently not level up.

Mean combined-weapons power index for Ancient ships

Added the 'mean c-WPI' for the Hybrid class, of which every Ancient ship has a different one.
Corrected the 'mean c-WPI' of the Sniper class.
In descending order they are:

Punisher: 102

Sniper: 97

Storm: 82

Legionary: 72

Defender: 68

Myst/Raider: 66

Raven: 62

Shock/Ghost: 60

Tank: 59

Engineer: 55

Review
What is 'mean combined-weapons power index'?
We can test weapons and compare their relative strenghts, say a full-hit
 = 1.4x ,
 a = 2.8x full-hit , etc.
To enable us to assign weapons an absolute power figure we (arbitrarily) define a full-hit has a power index of 100. Therefore, each weapon gets its weapon power indedx (WPI) from above weapon tests.
Because most weapons have inherent statistical fluctuations in how hard they hit, monitoring many single shots reveals their statistical averages - the 'mean WPI'. For instance, = 100*55% = 55,
 = 280*100% = 280,
 = 392*62% = 243
(for a complete list of values see Armor & Damage Simulator)

To assess the fire power of a ship class, and compare ship classes with each other, we combine all its weapons to arrive at the 'mean combined-weapons power index' (mean c-WPI).
This figure represents the continuous fire power when shooting with maximum efficiency (optimum use of all available weapons) at a passive target for an infinitely long time, when all statistical fluctuations (incl. temporary boosts from

 ) have smoothed out.

Simplest example, the mean c-WPI of the Engineer class is 55 and identical to the mean WPI of the because the Blaster is its only weapon.

The matter of Ancient Strong vs. Ancient Long appears more complex than assumed.
For instance, whereas the Strong Thermoblast does ~10% more damage than the Long Thermoblast, the Long Repair Droid repairs ~10% more than the Strong Repair Droid.
(Of course, the Strong version is far more intense; it does the job in 7 sec what takes the Long 30 sec.) The other items are nearly impossible to quantify.
